Questions / decisions with limits

When landscape choices become complicated

These answers explain where general guidance stops. Check current local requirements before changing a property.

Can any landscape be fireproof?

No. Landscape and building measures can reduce some exposures, but wildfire risk remains. Severe conditions, windborne embers and neighboring ignitions can overwhelm individual measures. Follow local warnings and evacuation advice rather than treating preparation as permission to stay.

Do I need to remove every tree?

Not necessarily. Condition, arrangement, dead material, slope and building proximity matter. Removal can affect shade, erosion and habitat. Obtain local advice and check tree protections before removal. See fuel patterns for the difference between a species label and a maintained arrangement.

Is gravel beside the house enough?

No. Mineral groundcover can collect leaves and weeds and does not address vulnerable vents, roof details or other building components. The material, edging, underlying assembly and ongoing care all matter. Review the building interfaces as well.

Which clearance distance should I use?

Use the current requirements and advice for your jurisdiction and property. Distances can depend on slope, vegetation and building conditions; no universal distance is provided here. A figure from a California, Australian or other regional guide is not automatically applicable elsewhere.

What if my plot is too small for a published diagram?

Ask the local fire and planning authorities how requirements apply to your parcel. Coordinate with neighbors and focus on permitted improvements without assuming a diagram grants an exemption. Do not enter or clear neighboring land without consent, and do not assume work on your side eliminates external exposure.

Will irrigation make plants safe?

No. Irrigation does not make vegetation fireproof and can fail or be restricted. Consider species suitability, arrangement, dead material and realistic water availability together. Design for the dry period you may actually experience, not only for ideal growing conditions.

Should I clear all vegetation from a steep slope?

Not without site-specific advice. Broad clearing can increase erosion and affect habitat or protected vegetation. Coordinate fuel treatment with slope and ecological expertise. Your site-reading record should identify these competing constraints before work begins.

Can I retrofit vent mesh myself?

Do not block ventilation or improvise a retrofit. Ask a qualified professional about locally accepted products, testing and installation requirements. A change that restricts airflow or does not meet applicable specifications can introduce other problems without establishing wildfire performance.

Does the contact tool assess my property's risk?

No. It creates an editable plain-text context note in your browser. It does not submit information, inspect the property or generate a risk score. You decide whether to copy, download or share the note with someone qualified to advise locally.

Still need a decision?

Use your local fire authority for jurisdiction-specific guidance, a qualified professional for building or landscape work, and official emergency channels for current incidents. Our source directory explains the scope of the references used here.
